Evaluating Health and Medical
Information online
The number of health-related sites is growing daily, and it can be difficult
to identify reliable and accurate information. Use these tips to evaluate
the information you find:
- Start with the most reliable sources: .gov, .edu, or .org sites
- Who is responsible for the site? - can that individual or organization
be easily identified?
- Is the purpose of the site to educate or to sell?
- Can the information be verified?
- Is the information intended for the general public or for medical
professionals?
- When was the site last updated?
Remember: Not everything is on the internet and not everything on the
internet is accurate or reliable. The information found online should
never replace a visit or discussion with your health care provider.
